The 2006 UBU Engineering and science Ball

University of Bristol Union - Engineering and Science Ball 2006 This David Lea Production, held at the Empire and Commonwealth Museum was quite a party. Ranging over a number of different aspects of the venue, in what was once the Railway Station canopy, this event took an enormous amount of gear, both lighting, rigging and sound.

David Lea, himself a student, spent a couple of days in the unit prepping gear with Andi Dell, and this was time well spent, as much of the rig was to be carried out by members of the Union themselves. CSS would provide riggers, sound and lighting crew to head up the disciplines.

The stage sections arrived from LMS Events on the Friday evening and was constructed by the students under David Lea's direction. The first of our crew arrived before 8am on the Saturday morning and set about rigging the trusses and lighting straight away. Dave Hughes saw to this aspect, whilst Seb Knowles, Pete McCrea and Steve Stone concentrated on the sound installation. Lighting design from Greg Szabo (our head of Lighting) set the tone for the event, and gave it a really great atmosphere.

From the word "go" the atmosphere was superb and it continued to rise throughout the night.  The post-meal gig started with a big band - a 24 piece university band called the Horn Stars, followed by an equally brilliant and diverse funk band called The Funk Brothers finishing off with DJ Dan.  The dance floor was busy all night with people trying to squeeze themselves onto it right up until the DJ's last track.

From start to finish, this was a real good and happy gig. Well done to all concerned!
